Policy switch baffles Māori

Māori Party co-leader Rawiri Waititi says there is wide-spread confusion across Māoridom about where the Government is heading, with new Prime Minister Chris Hipkins back tracking on kaupapa important for Māori.
He says many iwi were ready to sit around the table and help manage the restructure of water infrastructure.
Now they don’t know what is happening, with Mr Hipkins saying cabinet needs more time to consider changes.
“Everybody is quite confused about where this Government is headed and were that leaves a lot of these policies that were progressive with regard to Māori having an equal say in the management of that infrastructure, especally three waters,” Mr Waititi says.
He says it feels like Chris Hipkins has succumbed to anti-Māori rhetoric coming out of the Opposition parties and those stoking fears over co-governance.
