Oranga Tamariki fails monitoring test

Children’s Commissioner Frances Eivers says the latest Independent Child Monitor report into the performance of Oranga Tamariki shows change is too little and too slow – in some cases things have actually gone backwards.
The report found the child protection agency doesn’t always assess caregivers and their households before a mokopuna is placed with them, caregivers are poorly supported, and the agency is slow to investigate reports of concern about children in care.
Only 13 percent of tamariki Māori have connections to key people from their marae, hapū or iwi, and only 5 percent of plans consider the views of hapū or iwi.
Judge Eivers says Oranga Tamariki was only able to provide data on half the measures requested by the monitor.
