School closure necessary say principals

The Principals’ Federation is backing the Ministry of Education’s decision to close Auckland schools for the rest of the week because of storm damage to roads.
New president Leanne Otene says the decision, taken on the advice of the national emergency agency, would not have been made lightly.
“They would have considered the health and safety of students. I mean it is because vital infrastructure across Auckland needs to be repaired. Therefore getting our tamariki to and from school is an issue, so health and safety has been the priority in making this decision,” she says.
All schools, kura, early learning services and tertiary institutions in Auckland from Wellsford to Pukekohe will be closed to students until February 7, although some schools may be offering distance learning.
