Penguins focus for renewed attack on Waiheke marina plan

Forest & Bird is accusing the Department of Conservation and Auckland Council of rubber-stamping a development that threatens a colony of penguins on Waiheke Island.
The society is backing calls by Save Kennedy Point and elements of Ngāti Paoa for a judicial review of the consents issued for a marina.
Regional manager Lissy Fehnker-Heather says the developer, Kennedy Point Boat Harbour Limited, has failed to say how it will ensure the safety of the kororā or blue penguins living in the breakwater.
She says DOC told the developer it doesn’t need a wildlife permit, despite little blue penguin’s being a protected species under the Wildlife Act.
Moving the rocks which are their home will disturb them, especially as they may be in moult and at risk from water saturation and predators.
