Tupuna whare damaged in Te Kuiti floods
While the attention went on to Auckland’s floods, parts of Waitomo district were also put under a state of emergency because of rising streams on Friday.
Te Kūiti Pā took in a number of whānau who were forced to evacuate their homes.
Raniera Winikerei from Maniapoto FM says the station has been keeping whanau and the wider community up to date with latest developments.
He says some isolated communities towards the coast were cut off by road closures.
“There were a number of slips. One of them was very close to the Te Kuiti Pa urupa, it was actually on the shoulder which temporarily closed the Awakino Hill Road, and if that wasn’t enough, Te Tokanganui-a-Noho, which celebrated 150 years in December of last year, there was some minor water damage to our tupuna whare so there was a lot happening over the last four days,” he says.
The state of emergency has been lifted.
