Larry Parr has presented evidence on behalf of Ngāti Hikitanga to the Waitangi Tribunal, which is hearingone of the last of the major historic claim areas.
He says the hapu was stripped of its lands by Native Land Court actions in 1873, and later was forced to move off it by the crown’s Maori allies.
“In an ideal world, we would have back the land at Mahoenui where we were living, before we got burnt out – beause there are tupuna of ours buried there,”Mr Parr says.
Larry Parr says most of the land is now in private hands, but he wants the crown to buy some for the redress package.
