Wakatu called to account
The Employment Relations Authority has ordered Nelson-based Wakatu Incorporation to pay almost $30,000 to a former employee.
The company, which administers land and other assets for 3400 descendants of the region’s original Maori landowners, suspended and then sacked Rechel Gillan after she sent out property invoices without approval.
Management said 62 of more than 800 invoices were wrong.
The authority says Ms Gillan, who had worked for the incorporation for almost a year, had not been trained in company protocol, and her errors reflected flaws in Wakatu's procedures.
