Abuse survivors to help design redress
Nominations are being sought for a new survivor-led group to help design an independent redress system for survivors of abuse in care.
Alana Ruakere, the director of the Crown response unit to the Royal Commission into Abuse in Care, says the inquiry heard from almost 2,200 abuse survivors.
Many of them said they were not after money so much as acknowledgement of the harm that occurred and recognition of its lifelong impact.
“They’re reaching out for support that may not be available – sometimes really simple things like mirimiri, rongoa, access to those things the survivors themselves determine will help them in their healing pathway,” Ms Ruakere says.
She says the innovative design process could identify new ways to help survivors.
