Ahurei brings Ngāti Whātūa together
Ngāti Whātūa are gathering in Ōkahu Bay tomorrow for their first hui ahurei in over a decade.
Four takiwā comprised of hapū from Maunganui to Tāmaki will gather for a day of kapa haka.
Spokesperson Te Kurataiaho Kapea says the last ahurei was in 2010.
He says it’s chance to reconnect with each other and celebrate getting through the pandemic.
“No politics. No sports. It’s just purely focused on culture and ultimately these four items, so we can spread it across the tribe, everybody has been through a hard time the last two years so we want Ngāti Whātūa to get together and have a good day together and have a big kai and celebrate that hey, I’m there and this side of Covid we’re all there and it’s great to be alive and it’s great to be Ngāti Whātūa,” Mr Kapea
