Student support helping grow Māori health workforce
Manukau Institute of Technology is reporting high graduation numbers from a programme to support more Māori and Pasifika into careers in healthcare.
Te Ara Oranga: Pathways to Wellbeing Project is a partnership with Te Whatu Ora – Counties Manukau Health with major funding from Health Workforce New Zealand .
The polytech’s Maori co-leader, Keith Ikin, says it’s more than two thirds of the way towards the target of 500 graduates by 2025.
He says one on one support is key to its success.
“The cost of living is a real challenge for a lot of our students and we’ve got a whole range of other challenges around young mums, young dads, just trying to balance things and make things work and just trying to complete their studies. This programme is about supporting our students to hang in there and get through their studies,” Mr Ikin says.
