WAI 2575 claimants have met with ministers to discuss possible remedies for historic underfunding of Māori primary health organisations and service providers.
National Urban Maori Authority chair Lady Tureiti Moxon says claimants are keen the Government addresses the remaining recommendations in the Waitangi Tribunal’s 2019 Hauora Report, as well as issue an apology.
She says the underfunding had led to the demise of many kaupapa Māori providers
The meeting was chance to hear the Government’s response to a report by independent economic research group Sapere which put the shortfall at more than $500 million.
The Sapere report has been considered by the transition unit working on health reforms in areas such as workforce development, infrastructure, and commissioning.
Fellow claimant Taitimu Maipi says the claim was brought because Maori were dying because of an unjust and racist health system.
He says they’re ready to settle after 17 years.”
