Official role for Matariki expert Mātāmua
A major contributor to the establishment of the Matariki public holiday has become the first chief advisor on matauranga matariki at the Ministry of Arts, Culture and Heritage, Manatū Taonga.
Professor Rangi Mātāmua was welcomed to his new role today by the Associate Minister of Arts, Culture and Heritage, Kiritapu Allan, and Associate Education Minister Kelvin Davis.
Ms Allen says Professor Mātāmua has worked closely with hapu and iwi to ensure the integrity of the traditional knowledge he shares with the nation.
“I know because of who I see acknowledge him, pou of matauranga Māori across Aotearoa they recognise his matuaranga and his ability to hold us to account and to guide us,” she says.
Professor Mātāmua takes up his role immediately.
