“Imperialist’ bard fest gets ministry lifeline
The Education Ministry has stepped in after Creative New Zealand idealogues cut funding for a schools’ Shakespeare competition because the playwright’s work is part of the canon of imperialism.
Education Minister Chris Hipkins says the ministry will work with Shakespeare Globe Centre New Zealand and provide some support to help them through their current financial difficulties.
He says its Sheilah Winn Shakespeare Festival has given thousands of young people the opportunity to be creative, and increase their confidence on stage.
It would be a real shame if those coming through their education today were to miss out on these opportunities for learning and performing.
