Faster change needed at Kohanga
Tamaki Makaurau MP Peeni Henare says a proposed new model for kohanga reo may not deliver the rapid regeneration in leadership the movement needs.
The report by Nga Tuara Whanui governance working party recommends a switch to regionally elected trustees once a settlement is negotiated on the Kohanga Reo Waitangi Tribunal claim.
It also wants to elevate some existing trustees to a Kahui Rangatira that will give the board advice on tikanga and kawa.
The report was released to a hui at Turangawaewae yesterday, and delegates will take it back to their rohe for further discussion.
Mr Henare says while some of the recommendations are good, the timing is poor and decisions on adopting the report should have been made yesterday.
"For the scope of new growth and new development for the leadership of Kohanga Reo, that process could be done a bit better but I’m encouraged by the fact the report signals it is time for a regeneration and a growth of leadership within Kohanga Reo, not just at the board level but also at its national office level," he says.
Mr Henare, who facilitated hui in Auckland during the review process, says kohanga reo is strong regionally despite some of the poor management at head office.
