Vaccination push as Covid rate picks up

The Ministry of Health is warning keeping vaccination numbers high is critical to seeing off Covid-19.
John Whaanga, the deputy director general Māori, says while 158 of the nearly 1800 people who died from Covid in the first half of the year were Māori, high vaccination rates among elderly Māori helped protect that population.
He says there will continue to be peaks and troughs in infection rates as the nature of the pandemic changes.
“Still the biggest single thing we can do to negate the effects of Covid-19 is vaccination so we’re still pushing hard to increase the range of places people can get vaccinated, the different modes,” Mr Whaanga says.
In the past week there have been 11205 new cases of Covid-19 reported, including 1229 reinfections. and 17 deaths, bringing the total Covid-attributed death count over the past two and a half years to 2055.
