Māori ward performance could drive future turnout

A Māori political scientist lecturer hopes the election of Māori to councils around the country will lead to a greater turnout in future.
Victoria University lecturer Annie Te One says this election has led to unprecedented numbers of Māori in local government.
She says in the past local government hasn’t looked like a space for Māori leadership.
“I hope and like many people will be watching the next three years and beyond v closely to see if this kind of diversification of leadership through the introduction of Māori wards, perhaps this is one of the steps forward to have a system which actually reflects Māori values, reflects Māori people,” she says.
Dr Te One says more needs to be done to make Māori aware of the importance of local government.
