Rose Pere carried divine spark
The chair of Ngāti Kahungunu, Ngahiwi Tomoana, says the late Rose Pere was revered around the world for her insights into education, spirituality and the place of indigenous peoples.
Rangimarie Te Turuki Arikirangi Rose Pere died yesterday aged 83.
Mr Tomoana says her view that Ngāti Kahungunu and Takitimu have a unique approach to the world influenced his own philosophy.
"She was in that spiritual realm and that omnipresent realm and she kept referring to Ngāti Kahungunu and Takitimu waka as carrying a divine spark central to the well being of the universe. We weren't of this world, we were Ra Ngati Ra, we come from the sun. And that was her overarching philosophy, her psychology, her Tikanga, her mana, her ihi and her wehi," he says.
Ngahiwi Tomoana says Rose Pere was a constant presence in the tribe’s affairs.
