Māori comic artist unleashes inner superhero
A former teacher and pro wrestler is giving people the chance to discover their inner superhero.
Tapahia Heke, the creator of the E Tu Ana Wahine Toa comic, is offering superpower readings as part of Tāmaki Makaurau’s Art in The City project.
He’ll sit with members of the public and identify their possible alter ego – and then turn it into a comic portrait.
“As a young guy I was deep into the DC Comics Universe, the Marvel Comics universe, I was into the X-Men, I was into the Justice League and a lot of the other alter-egos. I loved the idea of these people becoming more than what they were and it was only later in life I realised I could use what I was doing to help enhance people or to give them faith where they had lost their faith,” Heke says.
The super power readings will be done outside 62 High St in central Auckland from today until October 15.
