Te Nehenehenui answerable back to our people a good thing says Maniapoto kaumatua

Chairperson of the Ngati Maniapoto Marae Pact Trust, Pat Rore Stafford who attended this mornings dawn ceremony in Te Kuiti for the closure of the Maniapoto Trust Board framework, says the change of structure from the old Board to the new Te Nehenehenui Trust is significant.
Pat Stafford says ” This is an important transition as I remember when Maniapoto had no board to deal with our own affairs. In the old days we had to source funds through the Tainui board which was set up by the Crown. It was because of this process we decided to set up our own entity, so we could represent our Iwi, so that’s what we did” he said.
Pat Stafford believes because of the new structure, accountability shifts from the Crown to the People. “Under the old system we were accountable to the government of the day, now under this new entity the Nehenehenui representatives are accountable to our Iwi first, and that’s a good thing ” he said.
