Collins’ path tougher without vote splitter
Māori Development Minister Willie Jackson says the withdrawal of Viv Beck makes the Auckland mayoral race tougher for Efeso Collins.
Mr Collins has Labour’s endorsement to become the super-city’s first Polynesian mayor, but that means turning out enough voters to defeat former Far North mayor Wayne Brown.
“Efeso will be a better mayor because he’s got a feel for the people, he’s got a feel for South Auckland for working class people, and I’d really kike to see him come through but it’s a tough road but there’s still a bit of time left,” Mr Jackson says.
He’s also keen to see his caucus colleague Paul Eagle become Wellington’s first Maori mayor.
