Human Rights Commission finds high bully rate
The Human Rights Commission says Māori, Pacific, Asian, as well as disabled and bisexual workers, are disproportionately affected by bullying and harassment in the workplace.
It says a national survey by Kantar Public found that 30 percent of workers experienced sexual harassment in the past 5 years, 39 percent experienced racial harassment in the last 5 years and 20 percent experienced bullying behaviour frequently in the last 12 months alone.
Equal Employment Opportunities Commissioner, Saunoamaali’i Karanina Sumeo says its unacceptable abuse is so widespread.
Workers said their experiences of bullying and harassment left them feeling disrespected, uncomfortable, angry, frustrated, and anxious. with some so distressed that they reported considering or attempting suicide.
She wants a review of Accident Compensation and Health and Safety at Work laws, to make clear the duties and responsibilities of employers to prevent revictimization from abusers.”
