Wet soil slows road repairs in Te Tau Ihu

There will be no quick fix for the roading network in Te Tau Ihu after the past week’s devastating floods.
Mark Owen, Waka Kotahi’s Upper South Island manager, says while the sun is out contractors are trying to reconnect communities.
“The concern is there’s more rain predicted later this week so we’re just watching that because we do need some time for the ground to dry out and then our crews work on permanent solutions to reinstate the road links,” he says.
Mr Owen says there will need to be hard calls about whether roads can be shored up or if they need to be realigned, and there will also be negotiations about who pays the bills.
