Competition hot for Far North Māori seats

Eighteen people have put their hands up to stand for the four Māori seats in the new Far North District Council ward.
They include former Kura principal Hilda Halkyard-Harawira, Ngāpuhi Runanga chief executive Sam Napia, Te Aupouri commercial development manager Penetaui Klescovic, former Mana Party candidate Clinton Dearlove, and current councillor Moko Tepania.
Mr Tepania and Mr Dearlove are also among the nine standing for the mayoralty, along with Kelly Stafford.
The field for the Te Raki Māori constituency on the Northland Regional Council is less crowded, with four candidates chasing two seats – Lance Bryers, Robin Grieve, Peter Lucas Jones and Tui Shortland.
