No quick end to Covid staff shortages

The chair of the Productivity Commission says organisations need to get used to the short supply of workers and plan accordingly.
Ganesh Nana says the winter influenza season on top of the Covid pandemic is putting a lot of firms under pressure, but it’s also exposing the systemic problem New Zealand hasn’t invested enough in the past in skills training.
The problems aren’t going away in a hurry.
“Good organisations and Māori businesses looking to the future need to plan ahead. We need to think about how much staff we have on board and we can have some buffers or what sort of arrangements can we put in place to ensure that when staff are sick or are ill, the burden is shared by other staff somehow,” Dr Nana says.
