Surrey writing retreat chance to start family saga

The winner of this year’s Surrey Hotel-Newsroom writer’s residency says it will give him a chance to dig into some family history.
Jared Wiremu Kane worked as a doctor for several years at Waikato hospital before turning to write full time.
He’s published short stories in literary journals and was a finalist in the 2021 Pikihuia Awards for Māori Writers.
He’s looking forward to taking up what’s been described as Aotearoa’s coolest literature prize, which includes a week’s stay at the Tudor-style hotel in Auckland’s Grey Lynn with complimentary breakfasts, and Sunday roast dinner and a $3000 putea from painter Dick Frizell.
“I’ve written one little short story about one of the first Maori-Pakeha families and I want to write an extension of that, a more grown-up version, covering my whanau going back to the 1820s,” Kane says.
