Apartment block papakainga in city
Taupo-based Tauhara North No 2 Trust has come to Tamaki Makaurau to create homes for its whānau.
The sod has been turned for the trust’s 30-apartment development in Hamlin Rd, Mt Wellington.
The trust’s housing subsidiary will retain 25 one and two-bedroom units as affordable rental homes for whānau Māori in need.
Five 3-bedroom units will either be held as rentals or made available for progressive home ownership.
Allocation of the apartments will be prioritised to support Tauhara North No 2 and Ngāti Tahu – Ngāti Whaoa whānau, mana whenua and wider whānau Māori.
Māori Development Minister Willie Jackson the Government has invested $12.31 million in the $25 million development through its Whai Kāinga Whai Oranga programme, including $4.8 million from the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development’s Māori Infrastructure Fund.
He says about a quarter of the Māori population live in Tāmaki Makaurau, and such housing projects will give whānau the opportunity to live in a te ao Māori setting while remaining in the city.
