Moriarty theatre takes Swing at dark topics

Māori theatre legend Jim Moriarty says the latest production by his company Te Rakau brings light to topics often left in the dark.
The Swing was written by his partner Helen Pearse-Otene and looks at subjects like ngau whiore or sexual abuse and whakamomori or suicide through a Māori lens.
He says it’s informative, inspiring and beautiful.
“Our theatre’s intent has always been to bring these korero into the world of light because when we keep them locked up in a cupboard or push them under a carpet, that’s when they can continue to fester or have a negative impact on our people,” Moriarty says.
The Swing runs at the National Dance & Drama Centre – Te Whaea in Wellington from July 22 to 24.
