More marae go solar

Eight marae in Northland is set to harness the power of Tama-nui-te-rā.
Ngātiwai is working with Māori power company Nau Mai Ra to put solar panels on the marae and establish a virtual power hub so uri can access that power.
The project is funded by the Ministry of Business Innovation & Employment’s Māori and Public Housing Renewable Energy Fund.
Trust board chief executive Huhana Lyndon says two Ngati Hine marae have undergone a similar project.
“Marae should be solar just like we have marae that is digital now through Te Puni Kokiri, these are things we should have as part of our business. We need to keep our lights on, we need to have our marae connected and ultimately we want our people connected too and contributing back,” she says.
