Flood wake up call for Whakatane council

Whakatane District Council is making plans to deal with what it expects will be an increasing number of natural disasters.
It’s taken the council more than 15 years to clear part of Matata which was declared uninhabitable after a 2005 flood sent debris through homes and properties.
Strategic projects manager Jeff Farrell says that gave the council a taste of what was coming.
“The key thing now is to recognise and accept change is coming, understand what that change means to us and then put plans in place to manage it in a positive way, take it as an opportunity to improve the situation rather than react once storm surges go through land and erode urupa into the ocean,” he says.
