Cooperation aim in media merger
Broadcasting Minister Willie Jackson says the merging of TVNZ and Radio New Zealand shouldn’t affect Whakaata Māori.
Under the plan set in place by previous minister Kris Faafoi, the new not-for-profit autonomous Crown entity, Aotearoa New Zealand Public Media, will come together from March 1 next year.
Mr Jackson says Whakaata Maori must have its own independence, but the Maori story also needs to be part of mainstream media.
“The new entity is about sharing and working with groups,. It’s not just about TVNZ< Radio New Zealand set up. We’ve got to have a new way of doing things and part of that new way of doing things is sharing things. It’s not about losing ourselves in it. It’s about contributing and getting that Maori perspective out,” he says.
