Leadership needed to end gang hostilities

A former gang leader says the war between two Auckland-based gangs was a sign of a failure in leadership.
A truce between the Tribesmen and the Killer Beez seems to be holding with no incidents over the weekend after weeks of shootings in Auckland and Northland.
Wynn Anania told Radio Waatea talkback host Matthew Tukaki the problem is not so much with those calling the shooting but those calling the shots – and it’s up to those leaders to pull their people into line.
“When they’re starting to target whanau houses and there’s kid’s in those houses, that’s unfair on the whanau themselves. If you want a battle, hey, get out and have a battle on the football field or somewhere like that but don’t go around shooting houses. That was a real big no no in the 70s and 80s,” he says.
Mr Anania says other problems like ram raids is a craze among young people competing on social media, and the solution lies in putting more resources into schools to address problems like truancy.
