Council aims for fair split of marae fund
Mana whenua and maata waka groups in Tamaki Makaurau are being encouraged to put their hands up for
a fund for marae and papakaianga developments.
Auckland councillor Angela Dalton says at a committee meeting yesterday $1.2 million was allocated from the fund for projects valued up to $170,000.
They ranged from $15,000 to replace an electricity switch board to putting in a carpark for kaumatua.
She says the council wants the money to be distributed equitably among marae in the city.
“We got information yesterday that showed there’s been an inequity and that comes down to the capacity of marae being able to firstly have a project and second being able to go through that process of applying for funding,” Ms Dalton says.
The council’s Te Matarae unit has staff who can not only help with applications to the fund but also help marae source other funding if their proposal is out of scope.
