Panel to guide tiriti health response

A member of a new Interim Hauora Māori Advisory Committee says it’s a chance to give Maori a greater voice across the heath sector.
The committee will advise the Minister of Health on matters relating to the Māori Health Authority Board and to the Public Health Advisory Committee.
While it was appointed by the minister, in future members will be nominated directly by Māori through Iwi Māori partnership boards and hauora Māori organisations.
Rahui Papa told Radio Waatea talk host and Whanau Ora Commissioning Agency chair Merepeka Raukawa Tait it’s a result of the sort of work she and other Waitangi Tribunal claimants had done.
“There was a call for greater accountability across the boards so this was not just the Maori Health Authority or the public sector committees, this is about guiding the government in their obligations to te Tiriti o Waitangi as it relates to hauora,” Mr Papa says.
He says Maori are no longer going to put up with second class treatment in health.
The committee will be chaired by Parekawhia McLean, and the other members are Dr Matire Harwood, Tā Mark Solomon, Amohaere Houkamau, Lisa Tumahai, Margareth Broodkoorn and Dr Jim Mather.
