Peters Sisters comp drawing women to league
Three sisters from Te Aupouri hope a new competition in their name will encourage the growth of women’s rugby league in Taitokerau.
Rugby League Northland has created the Peters Sisters Northland Women and Girls Competition 2022 to acknowledge the achievements of Hilda, Rona and Kahurangi Peters.
It will be run over three weekends in July and August.
All three sisters have represented New Zealand, and Hilda Mariu-Peters scored the first ever try in the NRL Women’s Premiership, dotting down in the Warriors’ 10-4 win against the Sydney Roosters in Round 1 of the 2018 NRL Women’s season.
Hilda Peters says she’s particularly concerned at the lack of playing opportunities for wahine in rural areas.
“We’ve got make Maori superheroes or role models for our rangatahi. This is one path for our girls to head down so then they can move on to the bigger pathway, whether it’s; the WNRL or the Maori All Stars they have at the beginning of the year with the indigenous (women players),” she says.
