Rōpū get funds to explore Matariki traditions
Sixty grants from $5000 to $250,000 have been approved from a fund set up to recognise the new Matariki public holiday.
The Matariki Ahunga Nui fund will support iwi Māori to regenerate and practice local mātauranga Matariki.
The successful projects range from marae based wānanga that explore traditional Matariki ceremonies to albums promoting waiata that tell stories about the stars.
Māori Crown Relations Minister Kelvin Davis says there are people, kaupapa and iwi who have been working hard over decades to ensure the specialised mātauranga embodying Matariki is not lost.
He says the regional spread of events will build the next generation’s understanding of Matariki.
