Waipareira chief executive John Tamihere is putting his hand up to become president of the Māori Party.
He says Che Wilson, who is standing down, did a fantastic job leading the party from total disarray to getting two seats in parliament.
While Mr Wilson came in promising rejuvenation, Mr Tamihere says he still has a few tricks to show the young ones.
“So as Ka hao te rangatahi, Hoani Waititi’s book says, we let the new net go fishing but I just want to say this for all the young people, it’s the old hands who throw out the new net,” he says.
Mr Tamihere says 70 per cent of the Māori population are under 45, but the 30 per cent above that still counts.
