Sea rise challenge to redistribute wealth
Greens’ co-leader Marama Davidson say coastal communities will need more support to adapt to sea level rise.
New research from the NZ Sea Rise project has found the sea level is rising twice as fast as previously forecast around parts of New Zealand, putting towns and cities at risk decades earlier than expected.
Ms Davidson says individual iwi and communities can’t be left to bear the costs on their own.
“(I’m) feeling for the leadership that our iwi, marae and coastal communities will have to do to step up to these changes and how we are going to make sure we are properly redistributing wealth to able to resource the leadership at a local level,” she says.
Ms Davidson says the NZ Sea Rise report shows why just aiming to reduce emissions isn’t enough, and it’s time to show some real ambition.
