Uffindell diversity pick in Tauranga by-election

National Party leader Christopher Luxon says the selection of Sam Uffindell as the party’s Tauranga candidate will bring diversity to the caucus.
National is odds on to win the true blue seat left empty by the retirement of Simon Bridges.
Labour is putting up list MP Jan Tinetti, who got 39.2 per cent of the vote when standing against Mr Bridges in 2020.
Mr Uffindell is head of financial economic crime for Rabobank and owns an agribusiness based in the Bay of Plenty selling a soil conditioner for farmers.
The University of Otago graduate worked in senior banking roles in Sydney and Singapore before settling in the Bay of Plenty with his family last year.
“He’s going to bring something really different to our caucus and some diversity to it in that in that he’s really well educated, he’s had a local and international finance background, he’s a local agribusiness owner, and he’s a very committed family man from Tauranga who can advocate well for those local issues, so that’s what we wanted so I’m really excited about what he’s going to be able to bring to our party,” Mr Luxon says.
The by-election will be held on June 18.
