The curriculum was released last week and will be implemented from the start of next year.
Hemi Dale, the principal lecturer at the University of Auckland’s Te Puna Wānanga School of Māori and Indigenous Education, says it will identify aspects of Aotearoa history which aren’t pretty.
“Rather than gloss over or hide some of those things we are going to face up to them. My confidence though is in teachers to deal with some of those issues which are confronting in ways that keep our kids safe,” he says
Hemi Dale says knowledge of the past is important for how we move forward as a nation.
