Taranaki Whānui leaders are calling for an end to the occupation of Parliament Grounds and surrounding streets, which were part of the historic Pipitea Pā.

Port Nicholson Block Settlement Trust chair Kara Puketapu-Dentice says ending the occupation requires a political solution, not just a law enforcement one.

He says protesters have made threats against kuia and kaumatua and uri involved in the Covid response.

Mr Puketapu-Dentice says attempts to compare the occupation to Parihaka are wrong and amount to cultural misappropriation.

Taranaki’s symbol is the raukura feather representing peace and unity, which is the kaupapa the iwi want to bring to the raruraru.
