Former lawmaker gives tauira taste of Māori law
Former Greens co-leader Metiria Turei is heading back to law school.
She’s been appointed pūkenga matua or senior lecturer at the University of Otago law faculty.
She says the legal system is changing and Māori perspectives need to be taken into consideration.
“The more we make Māori law accessible to students, the more those students when they’re lawyers can be responsive to Māori issues, Māori people, and the more we can start to change the way law is thought about here,” Ms Turei says.
Ms Turei has spent the past three years working on a national research project on Indigenous legal education with fellow Māori law academics Jacinta Ruru, Carwyn Jones, Linda Te Aho, Claire Charters and Khylee Quince.
