Kaimaumau fire burns on

A wildfire expert expects a blaze that’s cast smoke over the Far North since December to continue until the end of the month.
The fire at Kaimaumau started on December 18 and has twice forced resident to evacuate.
Rory Renwick from Fire and Emergency New Zealand says the combination of easily-combustible scrub sitting on peat means it is continuing to burn in the centre of the swamp.
“So we haven’t had any growth for the last couple of years but this is the first fire I am aware of in modern New Zealand times where the fire is still growing up to a month after it started – usually we can get on top of it within a few days,” he says.
