The Blood Service wants people to open their veins for Christmas.

Only about 4 percent of the population are blood donors, which is not enough to produce the 4000 units hospitals need every week.

Spokesperson Asuka Burge says it’s a simple procedure that can help save a life.

“The need for blood doesn’t stop, especially over summer. We know people are traveling and you’re enjoying time with your family and friends, but we want you to seriously consider making this maybe your gift over Christmas or something you do in the new year to help save lives,” she says.

All blood types are needed, particularly a rare kind found in Māori and Pacific populations.
