New course for Māori housing
Associate Housing Minister Peeni Henare expects a lot of hand holding will be needed to get Māori housed through a new investment programme.
A Whai Kāinga, Whai Oranga websiste will open next week to receive applications for investment through Ministry of Housing and Urban Development and Te Puni Kōkiri of $730 million earmarked for housing and housing infrastructure for Māori.
The Government expects that will be enough for about 1000 new homes, repairs to 700 existing homes and the creating of 2700 house sites.
Mr Henare says while they are trying to remove some barriers and create a by Māori, for Māori approach, the process of buying a house is never simple.
“It’s not an easy road and often you do need help on that pathway and I am clear to the team we work with at the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development as well as at Te Puni Kōkiri that for the large part those people are there to be navigators, to help navigate through that system, to give our whānau the support that they might need,” he says.
