Rule breakers keep Covid coming
Deputy Prime Minister Grant Robertson says going back up a level won’t stem Auckland’s Covid outbreak because many of the people spreading it aren’t following the rules at either level 4 or 3.
There were 71 new cases in the super city today, with 32 yet to be linked to a previous case.
Connections are also being sought for 21 of yesterday’s 55 cases.
A testing centre has been popped at the Te Awamutu Events Centre carpark this afternoon after a positive wastewater sample, and people in Raglan are also being urged to get tested if they have symptoms after a positive wastewater sample on Tuesday.
No cases were detected in Northland, and the Māori first dose rate there is now up to 54 percent.
Mr Robertson says there is very little transmission through workplaces, with most of the infection coming through households, healthcare settings, and large gatherings in homes – which are not allowed at levels 3 and 4.
He’s urging people to stick to the alert level rules, treat everybody outside their household bubble as if they had Covid, wear masks in public and wash hands regularly.
Mr Robertson says first dose vaccinations in Auckland seem to be plateauing around 87 percent, and people should use this weekend’s telethon-style Super Saturday events to get jabbed.
