Tongariro tops prison kapa haka

Tongariro Prison has won the second Hōkai Rangi Whakataetae Kapa Haka.
Teams from 16 prisons competed for the honour, with Rimutaka Prison, Auckland Region Women’s, Otago, Spring Hill and Auckland South Corrections Facility also winning sections.
Corrections Minister Kelvin Davis says the teams stepped up to the challenge and there were some amazing kapa haka performances.
He says kapa haka is about teamwork, discipline, and learning.
It also creates whanaungatanga among the participants, improves well-being, and helps inmates re-connect with hapū and iwi.
The kapa haka competition is supported by Corrections’ Māori Pathways programme in recognition of the value that connection to culture has for people in prison.
