Bomb threat hardens Collins’ fight for social justice

Auckland councillor Fa’anana Efeso Collins says a bomb threat won’t make him stop speaking up for the people of South Auckland.
The threat was made to a police tip line after he criticised TVNZ’s Police Ten 7 programme for reinforcing negative stereotypes about Māori and Pacific peoples.
The Manukau ward councillor says it brought home to him that he might be putting his family at risk, and he took time off to reconsider his position.
His wife convinced him he needed to keep speaking up for social justice and change.
“You won’t see me stepping back. I think it’s been good to take some time off to reset but to also be reminded this is a worthy cause and I’m not doing it for me. I’m hoping at least my girls see in their dad and in their mum people who were prepared to go to battle on their behalf for justice and social harmony,” Mr Collins says.
