Te Matatini shifts to mainstream broadcaster

TVNZ’s head of content is describing getting the rights to broadcast Te Matatini as bittersweet.
Nevak Rogers was previously involved with presenting the biennial Māori performing arts festival on Māori Television, where it played an important role in drawing viewers to the service.
She says TVNZ also has a mission to normalise te reo Māori me ōnā tikanga, and nothing can do that better than kapa haka.
"We're really privileged to have 2 million viewers tuning in to TVNZ so our ability to get this out beyond our own people and spread our history, our kōrero, our culture, our whakapapa, our reo, our tikanga to a broad New Zealand audience is really exciting for me, Scottie, Summer and the team," Ms Rogers says.
TVNZ will carry next year’s four-day competition on TV2 and its on-demand service, with additional coverage on TV One’s news and current affairs programmes.
