Marae revamp sparks backlash in Tuhoe
Tūhoe activist Tame Iti says the tribe’s governing body needs to get out of the way of hapū business.
His own concerns were sparked by a row over applications by hapū for grants Provincial Growth Fund grants for marae upgrades.
“When TUT heard about that funding coming through they immediately responded by bullying the PGF officials and also bullying those hapū who received the funds, three in Rūātoki and one in Waimana,” Mr Iti says.
Te Uru Taumatua and its chair Tamati Kruger have not responded to requests for comment.
