Maara kai brings Waitara community together


The organiser of a Waitara community garden says cultivating kai is bringing the town together.
Waitara Foodbank Pātaka Kai ran a Want to Grow, Give it a Go gardening session and crop-swap over the weekend.
The rōpu has secured $100,000 from Ministry of Social Development for a two-year food resilience project.
Pounamu Skelton says they are teaching seed sowing, seed saving, harvesting and nurturing crops, and people can swap crops, baking or other garden-related items.
"What's happening is they are reconnecting back to Papatūānuku, back to the natural world, starting to read tohu that inform us the right time to plant and harvest, so we are finding gardening together is bringing so much wellness among our people." she says.
